Lumos, a Illuminating privacy lock with removable flashlight

Lumos is a lockware that is more than a security element in your home. It is an illuminating privacy lock system that features a removable flashlight for added security. No longer do you have to fumble around in the dark to locate a flashlight, because they are located in every door in your home in which Lumos is installed.

2015 T-Minus 151, 48 student teams comprised of all levels of the program from 1st year Undergraduate to 2nd year Graduate level worked to a single brief developing designs which enabled access and provided a increased sense of security for an aging population. Allegion, America’s premier manufacturer of residential and commercial door hardware systems provided hardware and their expertise to enrich the week long student experience.

Through our brainstorm sessions, we found elders usually find electronic devices are not reliable majorly due to elders' ability to accommodate and learn, and of course an elder-unfriendly interface. As a result, trying to get away from applying electronic element onto our door lock design become our first design criteria  which also redirect our attention to an "old fashion", the products elders would feel more comfortable and familiar about. Furthermore, by going through the effects of aging, we found lose of vision, hearing, memory and muscle strength become the major features that set this special group apart from others. So, the design challenge become how to design a door lock system that is easy to operate, feeling familiar , ergonomic for elders and last but not least, enhance the sense of security.
